Pops Magellan Absolutely Takes Over This Sweetwater Studios Session
Something unidentified has entered Sweetwater airspace and it is carrying a bass. Pops Magellan has touched down at Sweetwater Studios with a four song transmission full of deep grooves, big tones, and enough low end to register on radar.
I got to spend some time behind the scenes with Pops during a short run of dates in Chicago which made this session especially cool to see. Now she has landed at Sweetwater Studios with a four song set that keeps the bass right at the center of the mothership. Pops switches between a alien green Yamaha BBP34 and a murdered out short scale Music Man throughout the performance, running both through an Ampeg rig. The tones are massive, the playing is fearless and the whole thing feels like a close encounter with some serious low end.
Sweetwater Studios is also the perfect place for this kind of mission. With access to just about every piece of gear Sweetwater has available, it is basically Area 51 for musicians, only with better amps and fewer government secrets.
What I love most about this set is seeing Pops completely in her element. She is not orbiting somebody else’s music here. This is her band, her material, and her universe.
Consider this your latest transmission from the low end galaxy.
