Peter Martin Releases New Album with Generation S, Featuring Reuben Rogers
Peter Martin officially founded Open Studio in 2015 to spread jazz education and he’s been expanding the scope of the company ever since. The latest venture takes the form of a new album called Peter Martin & Generation S which – beyond being filled with great music – pushed boundaries by being recorded at their St. Louis headquarters and live-streamed to a global audience.
“‘Generation S’ was born from my desire to answer some questions: What does jazz sound like in 2023?” Martin explains. “Can a rhythm section of veteran gen X’ers combine forces with a bad-ass Gen Z saxophone whiz to form a new breed of modern ‘Gen S’ jazz? Can we record an entire album that’s alive, interactive, and accessible, while walking the tightrope of no edits or second takes? The answers lie within my new album and band ‘Generation S.’”
Martin is joined by his Open Studio educators: drummer Gregory Hutchinson, saxophonist Sarah Hanahan, and bassist Reuben Rogers. Rogers has an incredible CV with performances alongside Charles Lloyd, Wynton Marsalis, Joshua Redman, Roy Hargrove, Mulgrew Miller, and many more.
He delivers impeccable tone and feel for the entire album. Case in point, watch the studio video for “That’s What’s Up,” which he kicks off and eventually solos over:
Peter Martin & Generation S is available now on iTunes, Amazon MP3, and more.
