Ray Brown: Isolated Bass on James Brown’s “Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag”

We love these isolated bass tracks. While not so isolated, you can really hear Ray Brown‘s bass on this reworked version of the James Brown hit, “Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag”, with Louis Bellson’s orchestra. Lots of leakage on this recording, because the bass was mic’d, while the band performed live.

The first part of this video is the bass isolation segment. The second half is the band and vocals (without Bellson’s drum track).

These guys destroyed this song. That does not even closely resemble the bass line. Got to be on the one! You not giving me the one.

  2. I was surprised to hear, but this really didn’t pump like the original…

Ha, I’ve never heard this version and I guess for good reason. I agree with Art. Where the hell is the ONE?

  4. I am perplexed! But Ray Brown was a big Jazz Bassist…Renowned. but clearly out of his element. Apprently, the person who footed the bill for this “sham” was’nt James Brown Probably some old stoddgy white cat that thought he was going to “school” everyone as to what a well produced, and refined recording of JB. Papa, not Ward Cleaver had a brand new bag. Much respect to Ray Brown…Right Man, wrong gig! Obviously JB had to swallow this one…maybe that’s why It’s never been heard (at least by me) Before.

  5. great tones in the microphones.
