Jaco Pastorius: Donna Lee, Live

September 21st is a sad day in the world of bass. Twenty-six years ago today, Jaco Pastorius passed away at the age of 35.

I’m playing more Jaco music than usual today (if that’s possible), and that has also included several videos.

And then I stumbled upon this rarity: Jaco performing “Donna Lee” live in a video I hadn’t seen before. I don’t know much about this particular performance, other than Peter Esrkine is on drums, it looks like Don Alias is on percussion, and it sounds like Bob Mintzer is on bass clarinet and Randy Brecker is on trumpet.

Where and when doesn’t really matter though. This is the good stuff regardless.

RIP, Jaco. You’re still missed more than words can say.

If you do know more about this performance, please drop a note in the comments.

  1. Yay Jaco Pastorius!! Always love hearing his stuff. Any one who likes Jaco should check out this guy named Thiago Espirito Santo and his CD Thiago Espirito Santo – The Jazz Tradition. Thiago does a couple versions of Jaco tunes on there that are mind blowing.
