Herbie Hancock’s Headhunters Featuring Marcus Miller: Hang Up Your Hang Ups
My pal Seth introduced me to this song a few years ago, and for some reason it always makes me think of New York City. We featured this song with Paul Jackson before, but this version is taken from Herbie Hancock’s Headhunters 2005 tour with Marcus Miller holding down the low end.
Marcus takes a solo starting around the 5:30 mark, but his interplay with everyone throughout the song proves why he’s such a phenomenal bassist.
The rest of the band is an all-star cast, too, with Terri Lyne Carrington on drums, Roy Hargrove on trumpet, Munyungo Jackson on percussion, Lionel Loueke and Wah Wah Watson on guitars and of course Hancock on keyboards and Keytar.

Marcus Miller does a nice Paul Jackson impersonation. When I saw him with the Headhunters, he had a 1951 P-bass reissue, and he got closer to Paul Jackson’s actual tone.
This is the visual example of the reason I wanted to, and still do play bass! Magnificent musicianship!
