Mountain: Beside The Sea, Live at Woodstock

While looking for some videos of bassist Felix Pappalardi, I ran across this clip from Woodstock ’69 of Mountain performing “Beside the Sea.” Pappalardi’s insanely overdriven tone really grabbed my attention, but his tasteful playing in backing up guitarist Leslie West drove it home for me.

In his time with No Treble, Kevin has met hundreds of amazing bassists and interviewed icons like Jack Casady, Victor Wooten, Les Claypool, Marcus Miller, and more. He's a gigging bassist performing jazz in Northern Virginia and bluegrass with The Plate Scrapers up and down the East Coast. Kevin appreciates all genres of music, from R&B to metal and everything in between. Connect with Kevin on Facebook and check his performance schedule on his website.

  1. Great that you gave props to Felix. This band never reached superstar status (in my opinion) and the world was poorer for not celebrating Felix’s solid bottom end. Of course, Gail Collins didn’t care too much about it either.

  2. Felix was an extremely melodic bassist. His melodic sensitivity in contrast with his overdriven tone continues to make him stand out as a bassist. He’s one of my major influences, though my tone is nothing like his.
