Bass of the Week: Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Bass Special SS

In 2011, Squier added to their retro-styled Vintage Modified series with the Vintage Modified Jaguar Bass Special SS. The model riffs on the Fender Jaguar but pares things down on the controls as well as the scale. Squier describes the 30-inch scale bass as “short and sweet with a big sound”.

Its overall design is based on the Fender Jaguar guitar from the ’60s. The Vintage Modified Jaguar Bass SS has passive electronics and therefore no set of switches or bass and treble controls for which Jags are known. Instead, its P/J configuration is controlled with separate volume knobs for single-coil and split-coil pickups as well as a master tone knob.

Other features include a four-saddle bridge, black pickguard, and a choice of finish color: Black, Candy Apple Red, or Silver.

Unbelievable value for money! The Jag shorty was my first bass and it really is worth much more than they charge for it. Even though I own much more expensive basses these days, I still play the little Jag regularly. In the 70’s a bass of this calibre would cost you a week’s wages or more. Now it costs not much more than a day’s wages.

Yeah, I have to give this little bass a huge thumbs up too. I play an Eastwood Map as my short scale now, but still kind of miss the SS; way better build than you would expect for the price, and a really tight funky tone for such a little guy. Worth every dollar.
