Olivier Pinard: Akurion’s “Wallow In Magnificient Pity” Bass Playthrough

Olivier Pinard and Akurion just released a new album called Come Forth To Me, which the bassist told us about earlier this year.

“It’s an artistic project,” he said. “We did it for the love of music. That’s it. It’s very cool because we did it live with the four of us in a room. Everything is really organic – no copy/paste.”

Now he’s released a special playthrough of the track “Wallow In Magnificent Pity”, which features some monstrous bass work. As with the rest of the album, Pinard is pulling it all off on a fretless Spector Rebop 5DLX.

“It was the first time I did a whole album with the fretless. I decided to use the same tone I have with Cryptopsy with it,” he explained. “Big distortion on the fretless, just to do something different. I’m sure a lot of people will be upset by that because when you think of fretless bass you think Jaco. That’s really not what I did on this album. I used the bass more like a percussive instrument.”

Come Forth To Me is available now through Bandcamp.
