John Ferrara: Perhaps Everything, Perhaps Nothing
Consider the Source’s John Ferrara has announced a new solo album to follow up his debut, A Harmony of Opposites. A Lesson in Impermanence, which will be released on March 11th, continues his deep exploration of harmony and melody through extended techniques.
Ferrara likens the collection of songs to a solo piano album as his use of two-handed tapping allows for independent musical ideas. His use of tapping is advanced enough that he can create a variety of textures and emotions.
“Each song tells a story and was born from a specific emotional state,” the bassist says of his new work. “I recorded this album at home and, with that freedom, I tried my best to never track a song at a time that wasn’t aligned with the state it was initially created in. I used the same method during the writing process, I would write some of a song, get as far as I could, and then I would come back to it when a comparable mood was present and drew me back to the song naturally.”
Today we’re featuring the video for the album’s epic 7-minute opening track, “Perhaps Everything, Perhaps Nothing”. The piece’s exposition presents an exciting atmosphere before smoothing out into an introspective mood. It’s a great example of how Ferrara is pushing the boundaries of solo bass.
A Lesson in Impermanence is available for pre-order through Bandcamp. (Ordering through Bandcamp scores you an extra track, too!) Ferrara will be on tour in March to support the release. Check his dates below.
