ZeroFive Audio Launches with Lowrider and Voodoo Pedals

ZeroFive Audio Lowrider and Voodoo Pedals

ZeroFive Audio is a new company based in France that has introduced two pedals: the Lowrider and the Voodoo. The units were created with the idea of turning studio mixing techniques into effects pedals.

The Lowrider is an EQ pedal intended for bass, though they say it works on other instruments just as powerfully. Based on the Pultec EQP-1A, the circuit is configured to apply a setting known as the “Pultec Trick” by audio engineers.

“The EQP-1A boosts and cuts low frequencies, and the famous ‘Trick’ happens when you boost and cut at the same time!” The company explains. “The frequencies of the two filters are slightly shifted, creating a unique and extremely musical response curve. The frequency selector (CPS for Cycles Per Second, named as a tribute to the original machine) allows you to choose the center frequency of the boost. The available frequencies are 30, 45, 60 and 100Hz. The D1 and D2 settings correspond to the two additional settings (Boost at 30 and 45Hz, and a deeper low-mid cut).”

The Voodoo is a saturation device inspired by another studio mixing technique. It has Drive, Tone, Shape, and Volume controls for dialing in your sound.

“This one comes from a mixing technique I learned a long time ago, mixing on an analog console and tape recorder,” says designer Melvin Zed. “This is a big EQ boost to an area of the signal, applied before an overdrive circuit, and the exact opposite applied right after. The zone thus saturated will be represented by its harmonics generated by the saturation, and therefore highlighted, but without being really dominant. Kind of Voodoo right?”

ZeroFive says the pedal allows for a wide variety of sounds from tape-like compression to heavy fuzz. They also state it maintains a clean and powerful low end, making it effective for bass and synth.

The ZeroFive Audio Lowrider and Voodoo are available now with approximate prices of $182 and $236.
