Anthony Crawford and Percy Jones Feature on King Llama’s “fata implexis”

King Llama: fata implexis

Los Angeles-based fusion group King Llama has released a new album called fata implexis that defies genre boundaries. The group, which is the brainchild of guitarist/songwriter Ryan T. Bailey and drummer Luis Briones, underwent some changes after the COVID lockdown.

“It’s a new era for us,” Briones says. “We’ve been around for over 12 years, but we’ve evolved. We used to be a little simple trio of more rock stuff and our previous album really was much more bare bones. This new album is more produced, with featured players, multiple guitar lines, some strings and some other things. Things change. But the essence of everything is pretty much the same.”

Importantly, the duo teamed up with producer Dennis MacKay, whose resume includes working with Return to Forever, David Bowie, Stanley Clarke, and more. MacKay’s idea was to bring the duo’s compositions to life with guitarist Billy Paulsen and bass guru Anthony Crawford. The versatile low-ender has worked with everyone from Erykah Badu to Allan Holdsworth to Justin Timberlake.

In addition to Crawford grooving hard for the record, MacKay brought on Brand X’s Percy Jones to provide his distinct fretless bass to the closing track, “Vita et Mors.”
