Living Colour’s Tiny Desk Set Features Wimbish’s Spector-Fueled Low End

Doug Wimbish has never been one to play it safe. From Sugarhill Records to his years with Living Colour, his bass playing pushes sonic boundaries. That spirit was front and center during Living Colour’s recent Tiny Desk Concert for NPR Music.

With his signature Spector bass, Wimbish laid down a deep, expressive foundation for the band’s mix of funk, rock, and soul. The set kicked off with their hit “Cult of Personality” and highlighted not just Living Colour’s chemistry but Wimbish’s ability to blend groove, aggression, and finesse.

Wimbish used a rich palette of tones and textures, layering bass lines with signature gear and looping techniques. From harmonics and delay to thunderous riffs, his playing matched the intensity of Corey Glover’s vocals, strong as ever and Vernon Reid’s new signature Reverend guitar.

The performance was a modern bass masterclass, showing just how expansive the instrument can be. For fans old and new, Living Colour’s Tiny Desk set proved the band and its bassist remain at the top of their game.
