EMG Marks 50 Years With Lee Sklar, Doug Wimbish, and Robert Trujillo Signature Bass Pickups

EMG 50th Anniversary Bass Pickups

EMG is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year with new models, including several new signature bass pickups.

First up is a throwback to a split coil design that’s been heard on thousands of recordings. The Lee Sklar P Set recreates the original precision pickup that the session bassist made famous on his legendary Frankenstein Bass. The new model features the EMG logo across the entire cover, a design choice that was only used during the first generation of production.

“Not only does this model include the original raised logo caps, but EMG tweaked the P preamp to recreate the tonal response of that original bass and its 18-volt mod setup,” EMG writes. “This modification results in a potent low-end presence and powerful output while maintaining that clarity and punch that EMGs are known for.”

Next, they’ve released the EMG Doug Wimbish DW Set, a PJ configuration that was previously only available in his signature Spector bass. Similarly, they were created using Wimbish’s exact EMG PJ set that he’s been using since the early 1980s.

“By listening to the PJ Set in his 80’s Spector bass, EMG was able to recreate the nostalgic tone bass players originally fell in love with. The DW PJ Set uses the original EMG logo to make it a truly authentic throwback in tone and aesthetic,” the company writes.

Finally, Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo’s “Rip Tide” Signature single coils have gotten a new gold finish.

The new EMG 50th Anniversary Signature bass pickups are available now with prices of $129 for the Sklar set, $189 for the Wimbish set, and $239 for the Trujillo set. Each set comes with a solderless wiring system for installation.
