Don’t Throw Away Your Strings: FRET12 Launches the “String Thing” Upcycling Figure

Looking for a creative way to use your old strings? FRET12 has launched the String Thing, a DIY guitar string upcycling collectible figure. Standing 8.75 inches tall, the figure comes unwrapped with 139 pre-drilled holes for you to wrap old, dead strings into a mummy.
“Every year, 1.5 million pounds of used strings end up in landfills,” FRET12 states. “Never throw away your dead strings again—summon the String Thing to join the fight against string waste and give those strings a second life.”
The holes fit up to 0.090-gauge strings, which fall a little short of most E strings on bass. However, the company explains that larger bass strings can still be used by weaving them into the others.
The FRET12 String Thing is available now at their website or at the FRET12 shop inside of Chicago’s Salt Shed music venue.
