Maurizio Mariani: Solo Bass Arrangement of Elliott Smith’s “Everything Means Nothing To Me”

“Everything Means Nothing to Me” is one of the most haunting and equally infectious tracks from the late singer/songwriter Elliott Smith’s album Figure 8. It’s one of those songs that just sticks with you for a while after you hear it, due in part to a repeated theme. Check out this solo bass version that Maurizio Mariani worked up. He...

Mathieu Verlot: “Little Wing” Live Double Bass Arrangement

Bassist Mathieu Verlot really impresses with this video he shared with us, taking the Hendrix classic “Little Wing” and turning it into an epic bass-fest. All four of the bass parts were improvised by Mathieu, and the drums were added after the bass recordings were completed. Mathieu said he’s working on his solo project, and “exploring all the faces of...

Pablo Elorza: “Havona” Lesson and Analysis

Bassist Pablo Elorza has started a new series on YouTube he’s calling “Deep Into Electric Bass Classics” with the infamous Jaco Pastorius tune “Havona.” Elorza rips through the tune, then breaks it all down for everyone trying to learn. He speaks in Spanish, but don’t worry, there are English subtitles for his in-depth analysis. Time to hit the woodshed!

Groove Spoon: Barney Miller Theme Bass Jam

I spent some time working out the bass line to Vulpeck’s awesome “It Gets Funkier”, which of course was recorded by the excellent Joe Dart. Which led me to search for more stuff by Joe. Which brought me to this awesomeness: a bass duet of the Barney Miller theme. Joe is joined by Jack Stratton, who stepped away from the...

Esperanza Spalding with The Roots: Live Performance of Weather Report’s “Predator”

My friend Marsha was telling me about Esperanza Spalding performing a Weather Report tune, where she lays down the bass line while singing the melody. I couldn’t believe I missed it. So after searching for a while, I found this (not perfect, but plenty good enough) fan-shot video of Esperanza with The Roots (wow!) performing Weather Report’s “Predator” (holy smokes!)...

Michael League, Cory Henry, and Nathaniel Townsley: Continuum

It’s hard to cover a Jaco tune without sounding like you’re just trying to cop him, so Michael League bravely set out to do his own unique version of “Continuum.” With Cory Henry on organ and Nathaniel Townsley on drums, the Snarky Puppy mastermind tackles the tune without sacrificing his own unique voice. Get ready for a great groove, incredible...

Marcus Miller Band: “Slippin’ Into Darkness”, Live at the Thanks Jimi Festival

Earlier this year, Marcus Miller and his band took part in the Thanks Jimi Festival in Wroclaw, Poland. Here’s one of the best fan-shot videos I’ve ever seen, capturing the band in their performance of WAR’s 1971 tune, “Slippin’ Into Darkness”. And it is awesome. This tune made it to Marcus’ recent release, Renaissance (read our review).

Mattia La Maida: All Bass Arrangement of “Come Together”

Here’s bassist Mattia La Maida, performing a Brian Bromberg-inspired solo bass version of the Beatles’ “Come Together”, which of course features Paul McCartney’s highly recognizable bass line. And in case that’s not enough bassists mentioned, a photo of Jaco Pastorius also makes a cameo appearance. And in case all of that is not distracting enough, Mattia has a pretty sweet...
