Daniel Rey: Palenque
Facebook friend César Romo Castro sent us this video of bassist Daniel Rey performing his original composition, “Palenque”. Daniel’s technique is truly remarkable – especially his right hand, which doesn’t look quite human. Have a video to share? Drop us a note at [email protected].
Chick Corea: “Spain” Live Downbeat Performance, with Stanley Clarke (1975)
So cool to see these guys back in the day, performing Chick Corea’s “Spain” following a Downbeat Reader’s Poll Award for Corea. The band includes Corea’s RTF bandmates Stanley Clarke on double bass and Lenny White on drums, along with Hubert Laws on flute, George Benson on guitar, and Bill Watrous on trombone.
Esperanza Spalding: Wild Is The Wind, Live
Esperanza Spalding leads this beautiful performance of “Wild Is The Wind”, filmed live in San Sebastian in 2009. The tune is from Esperanza’s Chamber Music Society. This one has it all.
Smooth Funk Bass Jam
Bassist Philip Smith says, “a little funk jam for you.” Philip played all the instruments on this track, but it is the bass we liked the most, of course.
The Rockin’ Chair Bass
Last week we featured a video about a bass being built into a snowboard. This time, it’s a little different. According to the guys who made this, “the Rockin Chair was invented on a coffee break at a newspaper in Värmland, Sweden, back in 1984 by the journalist Kjell Palmers and noted by his college Stefan Markebo. Many years later...
Jaco Pastorius & Weather Report: Birdland Live (1978)
More previously unreleased Jaco Pastorius gold: a live performance of “Birdland”, performed by Weather Report in Pennsylvania in 1978. Drummer Peter Erskine’s father Dr. Fred Erskine filmed the concerts in both Reading and Washington, Pennsylvania. Peter shared with Rick Suchow, “The sound came direct from the front-of-house mix board, engineered by Brian Risner, and my dad was using an old...
Ariane Cap: Bach Improvisation and Badinerie
Bassist Ariane Cap plays a duet (with herself) dubbed “Bach Me Up”. Ariane performs this on her 6 string Marleaux Consat.
Darren Frate: And Dream of Sheep for Solo Bass
Here’s a nice Sunday afternoon video, with bassist Darren Frate performing his arrangement of the Kate Bush tune, “And Dream of Sheep”.
Stuart Clayton: “Shape of My Heart” for Solo Bass
Time for some new awesomeness by bassist Stuart Clayton. This is Stuart’s arrangement of Sting’s tune “Shape of My Heart”, for solo bass. The arrangement comes from Stuart’s book, Solo Arrangements for Electric Bass.
King Crimson: “Sleepless” Live in Japan with Tony Levin
This song opens up just right: with some awesome percussive slap bass by Tony Levin. And he doesn’t stop there. The tune, “Sleepless” is from King Crimson’s 1984 release, , with Levin on bass and Stick, Adrian Belew on vocals/guitar, Robert Fripp on guitar and Bill Bruford on drums. Levin’s bass is painted to resemble the album’s cover.
Dream Theater: YTSE Jam, Live in 2004
Dream Theater celebrated the 15th anniversary of their debut record, When Dream and Day Unite, in 2004 by performing the album in its entirety. The instrumental “YTSE Jam” has some fancy fretwork by bassist John Myung, as he plays the melody with guitarist John Petrucci. Unfortunately, the camera guys don’t focus on Myung during the bass solo at 3:47, but...
Dirty Loops: Circus
Back in June, we featured Dirty Loops’ cover of Lady GaGa’s “Just Dance“, thanks to a tip from our friend Helge Rudolph. This time around, Steven Iarusci sends us the band’s cover of Britney Spears’ “Circus”. Here are two names we never, ever thought we’d type in a No Treble article: Lady GaGa and Britney Spears. But bassist Henrik Linder...
