Katie Thiroux Shares a Story of Resilience and Motherhood on “Always But Never Alone”

Katie Thiroux Always But Never Alone

Bassist and vocalist Katie Thiroux always plays with lots of emotion, but her new album proves to be her most personal to date. Always But Never Alone is a solo effort featuring fourteen tracks of just bass and voice. Beyond the intimate sonic experience, the collection of songs tells a story of Thiroux’s identity and resilience.

“This record is for anyone who has ever been through an uncertain time and had to learn to be comfortable with it,” says Thiroux. “For me, that journey began — and continues — with parenting my daughter, who is autistic, nonverbal, developmentally delayed, and has apraxia of speech. From the moment I was pregnant, I knew I’d never be alone again.”

Always But Never Alone is meant to be listened to as a whole. Its repertoire runs from jazz standards by Gershwin and Tadd Dameron to more contemporary composers like Paul McCartney and Harry Nilsson. Every three tracks, Thiroux puts in a verse from John Lennon’s “Look at Me” to reflect the album’s emotional arc.

“It’s not all dark,” she adds. “I find light in the dark. That’s what I do.”
