Mapping Tonal Harmony Pro: A Look at the Harmony App for iOS and Android

I recently stumbled upon Mapping Tonal Harmony Pro, an app that blew my mind. If I had access to this app in college, I would’ve understood my upper level harmony courses so much better. This is an app that’s not only useful, it is also fun to play with.

If you have a desire to explore functional harmony and are eager to learn about jazz theory, it really couldn’t get any better than this.

First, let me strongly suggest that you check out the videos, as the app isn’t entirely intuitive at first (videos included at the bottom of this review).

You can purchase supplemental workbooks through the company’s website which are very helpful to the serious student.

Mapping Tonal Harmony Pro’s core is a playable map (with lines showing relationships) of tonal harmony. This map has many levels of detail you can choose to show or hide, including:

• Basic diatonic functions
• iiim and deceptive cadences
• Sub V7 and Neapolitan 6ths
• Secondary Dominants
• Blues and other Modes
• Advanced Secondary Dominants
• And a complete Map with all functions

You can change keys, switch to Roman Numerology and select chords. The app then plays the chord, provides options for exploring inversions and change voicings and shows the chord played in notation.

There is so much to this app that you really will have to watch the videos and/or try it for yourself. Here are some other features worth noting:

• Record and save progressions
• Choose supported files to play progressions and watch as it illustrates the changes on the map (many included)
• Choose supported files to play entire pieces of music and watch as it illustrates the progression on the map (a dozen are include with the app)

This is truly a fantastic piece of software and an even better study tool. Any serious student of music with the appropriate piece of hardware should download this now.
