BC Bass Relay Raises Money For Cancer Research
Here’s another reason why the bass community is the best: bassists in the United Kingdom are donating to a good cause as part of the BC Bass Relay.
Started in mid-January by James Ryan, a member of the online forum BassChat, the relay includes a single Stagg BC300 Fusion bass being used as a “baton” for gigs to raise money for Cancer Search UK.
The group described the concept on their Facebook page:
“The concept is simple, one bassist has the bass and uses it… at a gig, for a music video, for a webcast, studio session, TV performances, etc, etc… When a new member takes the bass, he/she makes a donation, uses the bass and then passes it on to the next member and it starts again.”
Donations are also taken from audience members at the gigs. Since its initial performance in Portsmouth, the bass has traveled all over the UK and has gotten into the hands of several BassChat members and bassists including Steve Lawson, Rhino of Status Quo and Yolanda Charles. The bass is also lined up to be played by Level 42’s Mark King and ex-New Order bassist Peter Hook.
At the end of the bass’s journey, it will be auctioned along with the hardcase, a polo shirt signed by everyone involved, and a diary of the bass’s adventures.
After smashing their £1,000 goal, they’ve raised it to £3,000. You can help the cause via the BC Bass Relay’s JustGiving page. You can also keep up with the bass’s journey on the Facebook page.
