St. Paul Peterson: Mutiny (Live)

My good friend Ted Gould shared this video on Facebook with this comment:

“I don’t give a FUNK what you say about playing with a pick. Paul Peterson is a baaaaad bad man. FEEL. POCKET. GROOVE.”

And once again, we have another great Jam in the Van video, recorded earlier this year.

The Family (the band St. Paul came from) was one of the lesser known Prince protege bands with just one album, but the music was great! Mutiny has always been a favorite and really sounds like it might have been intended for The Time. The Time had just broken up when the Family came around, so it seems likely to me that Prince might have reused a song here or there. It is a pretty great song after all. If you listen you can hear some Time signatures like two bass lines (one keybass, one regular), as well as the big stabby pseudo horns. Also note the spoken parts (Darlin’ Darlin’…) very Morris Day. AND the group shout vocals (Mutiny!). The sort of gospelly walking parts during the solo. I love this type of bass sound on dance songs, it is chunky and funky all at once. I didn’t realize St. Paul was a bass player! The Family only had one video back in the day and it wasn’t for this song. The original track was Prince playing bass (and everything else) anyway. When the Family came out they had a few members of the Time too. Clearly I have spent far too much time listening to Prince, The Time, and the rest of the MPLS scene. Here’s Prince’s version
