Phil Lynott Documentary Coming This Fall

Phil Lynott: Songs For While I'm Away

After being revealed last year, a new documentary about Thin Lizzy frontman Phil Lynott is getting closer to release as the creators announced it will be released this fall. The film will cover the Irish rock star’s life and musical legacy.

“‘Phil Lynott: Songs For While I’m Away’ is a feature documentary, telling the story of how a young black boy from working-class 1950’s Dublin, became Ireland’s greatest rock star. As the lead singer of THIN LIZZY, Lynott was a songwriter, a poet, a dreamer, a wildman,” the film’s description reads. “Told extensively through the words of Phil himself and focusing on some of his iconic songs, the film gets to the heart of Philip, the father, the husband, the friend, the son, the rock icon, the poet and the dreamer.”

Director Emer Reynolds interviewed a handful of musicians who knew Lynott or were influenced him. Artists including Thin Lizzy’s Scott Gorham, Eric Bell, and Darren Wharton, Metallica’s James Hetfield, U2’s Adam Clayton, Huey Lewis, Suzi Quatro and more share their thoughts.

“Having been a huge Thin Lizzy fan throughout my life, it’s an incredible honour to be bringing this celebratory and intimate portrait of lead singer and songwriter Philip Lynott to the big screen,” Reynolds writes.

Phil Lynott: Songs For While I’m Away will premiere this fall in Irish theaters with a worldwide release to follow. We’ll keep you updated with details as they become available. Until then, rock out with Thin Lizzy’s “Bad Reputation”:
