Duran Duran Announces New Album, “Future Past”

Duran Duran

Duran Duran has announced Future Past, which will be the rock band’s first studio album in six years. The new record, which will be released in October, has been in the works for several years.

“When we first went into the studio in late 2018, I was trying to persuade the guys that all we needed to do was write two or three tracks for an EP,” says singer Simon Le Bon. “Four days later, with the nucleus of 25-plus strong songs in the can that all deserved development, I realized we’d be in it for the long haul, but that was before COVID. So here we are in 2021 with our 15th studio album, ‘Future Past’ straining at the leash.”

The band recruited producers Giorgio Moroder, Erol Alkan, and Mark Ronson to help realize the project. Bassist John Taylor says working with the trio was essential to the creativity of Future Past.

“We have to starve ourselves of creativity long enough that when we do show up we have something to say,” he said. “[The studio sessions] are quite exhausting because we have been down this road. We can finish each other’s sentences and I guess, to some extent, we can do that musically as well. We are working with the same cast; it’s like a soap opera. That’s why collaborators become so important as you need to keep the spirit lively.”

Duran Duran’s Future Past will be out October 22nd, but the band has released its first single with “Invisible”. The song leans heavily on the electronic pop sounds of the ‘80s with some thick bass work by Taylor.
