Tal Wilkenfeld: Chelsea Hotel

We think – as do many readers here – that Tal Wilkenfeld is a killer bassist. Now she’s proving she can sing, too. Wilkenfeld recently launched her own YouTube channel with a solo version of the Leonard Cohen classic “Chelsea Hotel.”

Franklin Peredo: La Fleur de Sipo

Franklin Peredo sent us this video of his solo bass song “La Fleur de Sipo,” and it really caught my attention. The song has a beautiful flow to it thanks in part to Peredo’s incredible right hand technique and rhythmic sensibility.

Fernando Lamadrid: La casa de las notas escondidas

If you’ve been a No Treble reader for a while, you’ll likely recognize the name Fernando Lamadrid, thanks to the video we shared in August 2013 of his tune “Mollete Express” (this was such a great tune, we even published a transcription by Stuart Clayton). Fernando is back with a new video that shows off another side, with the tune...

Nenad Vasilic: Vranjanka

Bassist Nenad Vasilic has a new album out this month called The Art of Balkan Bass, and this preview track has been stuck in my head for a week. “Vranjanka” is a traditional Balkan folk song that Vasilic tackles by himself with his upright. He perpetuates the groove with some perfectly laid ghost notes and light string slapping. Check out...

Rich Brown: “Lua” Live (2012)

Back in 2009, Rich Brown shared a video with us of him playing his original composition, “Lua”. He told us the song was “written after spending many an evening gazing at the moon in it’s luminous splendor. A bit Metheny, a bit Gismonti, a bit Garrison.” Here’s a newer video of Rich playing that tune live. The tones he gets...

Eduardo Machado and Robertinho Silva: Choro Azedo

There has to be something in the water in Brazil that contributes to great bass playing. Maybe I should plan a trip. Bassist Eduardo Machado shared his videos with us, and this one is so much fun I had to pay it forward. Eduardo plays two bass tracks on this and is joined by percussionist Robertinho Silva on this tune...

Rob Kohler: At The Top

Rob Kohler: At The Top

Kevin shared this video with me a few days ago, and it blew me away. Bassist Rob Kohler performs “At The Top,” a tune the bassist says is “an old bass song.” I’m not familiar with the tune, but whatever the origin, it is a great tune matched with this terrific performance. If you know about this song, please share...

Russ Sargeant: Still

Russ Sargeant: Still

It has been way too long since we’ve featured bassist Russ Sargeant. Russ has just completed a recording of his newest tune for bass and vocals, “Still”. Once again, his incredible musicianship shows through. You should also check out “Beauty” – another of Russ’s videos we shared in 2009. Once again, well done, Russ.

Davie504: Halloween Meets Bass

We always love celebrating Halloween bass style. Davie504 can always be counted on for doing something cool. Put that together and you have this Halloween video of various tunes by the talented bassist. Davie asks, “Which songs am I playing? Leave a comment!” And Happy Halloween from all of us.

Josh Cohen: Toots Thielemans’ “Bluesette” Solo Bass Arrangement

Back in January, bassist Josh Cohen shared his terrific story in our Reader Spotlight series. Josh is back with this new video of him performing a solo bass arrangement of the Toots Thielemans standard, “Bluesette”. “Bluesette” was first recorded by Toots in 1962, with him whistling and playing guitar in unison. Here’s the original from The Whistler & His Guitar:

Renaud Garcia-Fons: Bajo de Guia

Renaud Garcia-Fons: Bajo de Guia

Renaud Garcia-Fons never ceases to amaze me. Here’s another fantastic performance of his song “Bajo de Guia,” taken from his DVD The Marcevol Concert. Garcia-Fons has an insane amount of facility on the bass, especially in thumb position. His gypsy/flamenco style proves his rhythmic mastery, which is taken even further with his foot-tapping pattern.

Ariane Cap: Solo Bass in Stereo

Grab a pair of headphones and get ready for a cool sonic experience. Ariane Cap put together an awesome solo bass jam in stereo with different lines panned left and right to please your ear holes. “All six string bass, a looper, a Delay pedal and a Slicer Pedal create all the mayhem,” Cap writes. “Recorded in true stereo!”
