Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On” is a must-have album for bassists. Its songs are textbook examples of grooving by the late great Bob Babbitt and James Jamerson. Now you can hear Jamerson craft those bass lines in a newly reissued live album from 1972.

Neil Young has played with plenty of bands over the years, but Crazy Horse is the one that keeps coming back. Now Young and Crazy Horse have teamed up again for “Colorado,” a ten-song album that is their first since 2012’s “Psychedelic Pill.”

Petros Klampanis has released a new album, “Irrationalities,” that puts the bassist in a new texture for his original compositions. Known for his lush string arrangements, Klampanis opted to make a trio recording.

Nekromantix has been playing psychobilly around the world for thirty years, and they’re celebrating with a new release called “3 Decades of Darkle.” Founder, bassist, and vocalist Kim Nekroman leads the trio through the band’s nine-album catalog.

Kirk Whalum has released a new album called “Humanité,” which sees the Grammy-winning saxophonist and vocalist collaborating with artists from around the world. This includes Barry Likumahuwa, Marcus Miller, Jackie Clark, Braylon Lacy, Idy, and Mark Jaimes on bass.

Bassist Nenad Vasilic has returned to solo bass recordings with his new album entitled “Bass Room.” Each song is performed with a wide variety of styles, ranging from traditional Balkan songs to contemporary jazz to classical.

Spyro Gyra has returned with their first album of new material in six years by releasing a collection of covers. “Vinyl Tap” features reworked versions of classic hits of the vinyl era, and it covers a lot of ground.

It’s been eight years since Sonic Youth called it quits, but that hasn’t stopped Kim Gordon’s art. The bassist has just released a solo album, entitled “No Home Record,” which is the first in her nearly four-decade career.

Pablo Elorza has paid homage to his bass idol on his new album, “Jaco Pastorius Tribute.” The bassist, who has shared several great Jaco lessons with us, covers some of the legend’s best known songs as well as a few more obscure numbers.

The Darkness has returned with “Easter Is Cancelled.” The record “examines the role of the musician in the barbarous culture of the world today...” That’s summed up in the opening track, which features Frankie Poullain riding the low notes on his Thunderbird.

After releasing music with his bands Bigmouth and Superette, bassist Chris Lightcap has combined the efforts into a group called SuperBigmouth. As such the group includes two tenor saxophones, keyboard, two guitars, bass, and two drumkits.

The stellar trio of Chick Corea, Brian Blade, and Christian McBride have teamed up once again to release an album. “Trilogy 2” is the followup to their 2014 release and includes twelve songs ranging from Corea’s originals to jazz standards.
