Yussef Dayes and Alfa Mist: Love Is The Message
Yussef Dayes and Alfa Mist is a very cool band. Rocco Palladino (Pino’s son) is the bassist, and I’m guessing he’s had some amazing bass lessons over the years. Here they are again, performing Dayes’ “Love Is The Message.”
Jason Raso: Vienna Swing
Jason Raso sent us this video, and I immediately watched it, thinking, “this has a great Weather Report vibe!” Then I read the note: “Respectfully dedicated to Joe Zawinul and the music of Weather Report.”
Travis Shaw: Don’t Forget (How Much We Care)
For the second day in a row, we received a great bass and drums duo video from a No Treble reader. Travis Shaw has a new solo album coming this year, and he’s shared a video in advance of the release.
Zlatoyar and Alex Golub: Spiders
Zlatoyar sent us this video, which he recorded with fellow bassist Alex Golub and drummer Alexander Kasiarum. Here’s their arrangement of the System of a Down tune, “Spiders.”
Scary Pockets: River
When I saw that Scary Pockets did a cover of Joni Mitchell’s great tune, “River,” I wasn’t sure what to expect. But they blew me away. Anchored by Joe Ayoub, with some excellent vocals by Rett Madison, here’s their take on the song.
Jesús Rico Pérez: Les Chemins d´Èlodie
It has been a while since we’ve seen a new video by Jesús Rico Pérez, but thankfully that all changed this morning with his release of this cover of the Mau Lao tune, “Les Chemins d´Èlodie.”
Rufus Reid with Sullivan Fortner: Always in the Moment
Rufus Reid has a new duo album coming with pianist Sullivan Fortner on the vinyl-only label Newvelle Records. Luckily, the company also captured video of some of the recording session.
Alphonso Johnson: Afro Blue
Kevin sent me this incredible video of Alphonso Johnson‘s band performing Mongo Santamaría’s “Afro Blue,” which was popularized by John Coltrane. This was a new group Alphonso formed earlier this year - and what a killer band it is!
George Duke Band with Louis Johnson: Silly Fightin’, Live in Tokyo (1983)
Louis Johnson was one of the most dynamic bassists of all time. Here’s a great clip of him performing “Silly Fightin'” with the George Duke Band in Tokyo during a 1983 concert - complete with a killer bass solo.
Skunk Baxter: Rikki Don’t Lose That Number
We’re gearing up for the 2020 NAMM Show and looking back at some of the cool videos from past shows. In this clip, Jeff “Skunk” Baxter performs Steely Dan’s “Rikki Don’t Lose That Number” with Nathan East, live at the 2016 TEC Awards.
Scary Goldings: Plant Bass Diet
Scary Pockets just shared a new video for their Scary Goldings project with organist Larry Goldings, in support of their new record, “The Ego Trap.” In this clip, Sam Wilkes handles the bass part. This one grooves!
Berklee Bass Department: 2019 Holiday Jam
This is a tradition we love! This year, it almost didn’t happen, but Steve Bailey came through with a video for us to share, with Ron Carter, Justin Chancellor, Leland Sklar, John Patitucci, Victor Wooten, Janek Gwizdala, and Freddie Washington.
