Maddie Jay & The pH Collective: No Going Back
Maddie Jay has released her second track with the The pH Collective – one she describes as “some good ol’ fashioned new age acid jazz.” The tune is “No Going Back,” which was written by Maddie with arrangements by the band. This one grooves.
Evan Marien: Water On The Brain Pt 2
Evan Marien shared his new video with me this week, and it is so great to see another great performance from him. In this video, Evan performs his arrangement of the Allan Holdsworth tune, “Water On The Brain Pt2”. Check out the solo! If you dig this, Evan made this available on his Soundcloud page.
Rush: Xanadu (R40 Live)
Rush hit the road this year for their “R40” tour – celebrating 40 years as a band. Each concert was a major production too: elaborate sets and the band starting with their newest work – Clockwork Angels – and moving back in time through their catalog. As they worked back, sets and equipment changed to match the time. Now they’ve...
Project RnL: Expiration Date
Project RnL and bassist Or Lubianiker shared this video earlier this week, and it is another solid performance by one of our favorite bands. “We’ve been working recently on an ‘electronic’ live setup, and here’s our first attempt at it,” they shared. The song is “Expiration Date,” originally written by Pomplamoose.
Nathan Navarro: Mozart’s “Lacrimosa” Solo Bass Arrangement
Nathan Navarro is back with another great solo bass arrangement. This time he explores the classical world with Mozart’s “Lacrimosa”. Navarro brings lots emotion to the performance, adding drama with dynamics changes and beautiful phrasing. A digital download of the song as well as tablature and sheet music are available on his website.
Martha Reeves with James Jamerson: Live on Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert 1974
There’s not a whole lot of live footage of the late, great James Jamerson, but the bits that we have are fantastic. Here’s a clip of the master bassist laying it down for Martha Reeves on a 1974 episode of “Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert.”
Bushrock: Towards the One
I discovered this video (and band) thanks to Project RnL’s Eyal Amir. Here’s what he said: “Beautiful music, combined with originality & groove. This is so great!” Bushrock includes Kenwood Dennard on drums, Delmar Brown on keys and vocals, and Yossi Fine on bass. This is such a terrific tune and performance, and wait until you hear Yossi’s solo (around...
Ed Lucie and Anthony Vitti: Forgotten Grooveyard #12
Berklee bass professor Anthony Vitti has a cool YouTube series called “Forgotten Grooveyard,” where he sits down with faculty, students and visiting artists at the school to kick out the jams. “The idea behind the ‘Forgotten Groove Yard’ was to record some lesser known classic grooves,” Vitti writes. “As a bass player, I approach everything from a rhythm section perspective....
Marito Marques & Rich Brown: The Stormcloud’s Narrative
Drummer Marito Marques runs a series of videos called “Drum & Bass Sessions”, where invites different area bassists to perform with him in his studio. Bassist Rich Brown sat in on Marito’s fourth video of the series. He shared this video with us so we can share it with you.
Alberto Rigoni: Bass Guy
We’ve all had that moment when an unknowing fan asks what’s wrong with our “guitar.” Alberto Rigoni’s latest single, “Bass Guy”, and its video tackle that situation. The song will be on the bassist’s upcoming album Bassorama, due summer 2016.
Jacky Grandjean: Señorita Melancolía
Bruno Dumant shared this excellent video with us. Here’s his note: “Jacky Grandjean passed away in November last year. He mostly played within a flamenco trio in France. Here is a little video of him. No thrills, no loops, just music.”
Overdriver: Mr. Probz “Waves” Cover
My daughter Sara is a constant source of new music for me. This time though, I’ll admit I was initially skeptical when she sent me this video. But as I watched, I grew more impressed with this Brazilian duo, Overdriver. In this video, bassist Fabi Terada and vocalist/guitarist Evandro Tiburski perform a cover of the Mr. Probz tune, “Waves” with...
