Bassist Cheikh Ndoye has caught our attention – and our ears – more than once here. We think you’ll dig this one too: the Cheikh Ndoye Project in the studio, performing “Linguere”. Throughout the song, Cheikh switches effortlessly between laying down a funky line to playing melodies, and then switching yet again to some light accompaniment to back the soloists....

Dennis Chambers is on the short list of drummers I’d love to play with, and I’m sure most bass players would agree. Billy Sheehan is one of those bassists lucky enough to do just that, in the band Niacin. Here’s the trio with John Novello on keys performing “Blood, Sweat & Beers.” This one grooves. Oh yeah.

Before Yellow bassist Johannes Pehrson sent us this video of their new tune, “Following The Signs.” Featuring vocalist Anna Schonebeck, Pehrson said the song was recording using only a 6-string bass, drums and vocals. Great tune and sound from this trio.

Bassist Petros Klampanis is working on his next album and has released this awesome video for the title track. The group mixes jazz, world music, and chamber music into a beautifully organic style of music. Klampanis is currently raising money for his album on Kickstarter.

Prepare yourself: Erlend Caspersen sent us this playthrough of his band Abhorrent’s song “Reward System Malfunction,” and it’s scary good. The song comes from their upcoming album Intransigence, and while the band has a vocalist, this playthrough removes the vocals to focus on the instruments. Caspersen navigates the song with incredible agility moving between lightning fast fingerstyle and slap.

It has been way too long since we’ve featured bassist Russ Sargeant. Russ has just completed a recording of his newest tune for bass and vocals, “Still”. Once again, his incredible musicianship shows through. You should also check out “Beauty” – another of Russ’s videos we shared in 2009. Once again, well done, Russ.

Bassist Simone Masina shared this video with us of him performing the Lenny Kravitz tune, arranged for double bass and vocals. The vocalist is Angelica Lubian, and the arrangement is described by Simone as a “cover of cover” – inspired by Adam Ben Ezra’s solo bass version of the tune. Enjoy!

The music world is mourning the loss of the great Jack Bruce this week. Here’s yet another reminder of his talent and longevity in this 2009 performance with Robin Trower. The tune is “Lives of Clay”. RIP, Jack.
