Bartolini MG4PJ Bass Pickup Packs P/J Design into Music Man-Style Housing

Bartolini MG4PJ Bass Pickup

Bartolini has expanded their b-axis line of pickups with the MG4PJ, which fits a P/J pickup set into the Music Man MM-shaped cover. The quad-coil design has dual inline coils on the bridge side and P offset split coils on the neck side.

It features fully encapsulated Alnico V exposed poles, though they are fully shielded. Bartolini adds that the sensing aperture is wider than a standard Music Man pickup, so “you sense more of each string.” Its tone is described as “very clear and super punchy,” which the company says is built on its original vision.

“The b-axis pickups are based on the very foundations of Bill Bartolini’s initial pickup designs back in the early ’70s,” they write. “The guiding design principle was to provide a highly asymmetric magnetic field to fully capture string vibration. This “high asymmetry” (hence the pickup’s original ‘High A’ name) provides a tone like acoustic instruments, which have a naturally asymmetric response due to bridge structure and variations in biased tension.”

The Bartolini MG4PJ pickup is available now for $275.
