Tedeschi Trucks Band: Tell Mama

Tedeschi Trucks Band: Tell Mama

Last summer, Tedeschi Trucks Band took to the road for their Wheels of Soul tour. The band joined up with Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings and guitarist Doyle Bramhall II. Here’s the group performing “Tell Mama”, the tune made popular by Etta James in 1967. Tim Lefebvre lays down the bass and looks like he’s having fun doing it. The...

Niodel: 6

Niodel: 6

I love musicians that experiment and think outside the box. Here’s a great example of that with a video by Niodel. The duo of bassist Paolo Cipollini and drummer Mattia Bellotti get their sound by mixing in live electronics and “sound expansions” to create eerie and sublime sonic textures. Here’s a clip they simply call “6”:

Ben Titus: Looping Bass Arrangement of “Radioactive”

Ben Titus: Looping Bass Arrangement of “Radioactive”

Bassist Ben Titus sent in this awesome looping arrangement of the Imagine Dragons hit “Radioactive”, and I’m glad he did. He gets a gorgeous tone from his six-string and creates a perfect pad with his chord voicings.

Los Kamikazes: Nuevo Planeta

Los Kamikazes: Nuevo Planeta

Here’s a brand new video featuring some seriously great bass by Fernando Lamadrid. Fernando wrote this tune, which was arranged by Los Kamikazes – the band in this video. Holy smokes.

Tom Barger and Leland Sklar: Jamaica Rendezvous

Tom Barger and Leland Sklar: Jamaica Rendezvous

Today is Leland Sklar‘s birthday, and we’re celebrating with another great video. If ever you’re looking for a lesson in tone, taste, and time, just look up a video of Lee. (Even better, you should follow him on Facebook.) Here’s a duet he shared of “Jamaica Rendezvous” with the late singer/songwriter Tom Barger. Sklar lays down a tasty groove with...

Alex Bershadsky & Rostik Lerman Project: Tango Traumatico

Alex Bershadsky & Rostik Lerman Project: Tango Traumatico

If you’re addicted to that fretless “mwah”, then you’re going to want to sit down for this one. Alex Bershadsky teamed up with pianist Rostik Lerman and drummer Shay Sasson to record Lerman’s composition “Tango Traumatico” and it’s got tons of creamy bass tone. The trio gets into a great tango groove with solid foundation from the bassist before he...

Mike Frost Band and FSO: Astral Dance

Mike Frost Band and FSO: Astral Dance

Mike Frost stepped things up this year with a stellar collaboration with the Florence Symphony Orchestra. The bassist performed his work “Astral Dance” with his band plus the entire orchestra to create a huge and engrossing musical experience. Starting with the strings, the tune starts almost as a lullaby that Frost puts a melody on. It builds in intensity with...

Coffee Break Grooves: Marcelo Yakko Jam

Coffee Break Grooves: Marcelo Yakko Jam

The music of bassist Marcelo Yakko is on heavy rotation in my library. I just spotted this great video of him jamming along to one of the Coffee Break Grooves backing tracks, and it knocked me out like so much of his music. Marcelo is jamming to the track “Chill 1-2”, which you can get here if you want to...

Carlos Santana/Wayne Shorter Group: Deeper Dig Deeper (Live, 1988)

Here’s a great old clip of the Carlos Santana/Wayne Shorter Group performing the Santana tune “Deeper, Dig Deeper” at Pori Jazz in 1988. Laying down the groove is the one and only Alphonso Johnson. Such great footage.

Rush: Working Man (Live, 1974)

Rush: Working Man (Live, 1974)

In April 1974, Rush took the stage at the Laura Secord Secondary School in St. Catharines. Here’s a clip of the band performing “Working Man”, which includes John Rutsey on drums (who was replaced by Neil Peart just a few months later) and Geddy Lee rocking a P-bass. The tape of this concert was found during the making of Rush:...
