Manuel Jiménez Gastélum: “Fine China” Bass Cover
It’s always great to discover cool bass lines that you wouldn’t normally hear. I don’t listen to much pop, but Manuel Jiménez Gastélum sent in this cover of Chris Brown’s “Fine China,” and I dig it. The song has a funky distorted bass line that he absolutely nails and his tone is killer.
Doug Johns: Booty Groove
When Doug Johns got together with drummer Jordan Simmons, he described it as “just groovin’.” Here’s some of that groovin’, titled “Booty Groove”. Oh yeah.
Troy Roberts’ Nu-Jive 5, Featuring Eric England: Stoner
A couple of weeks ago, we featured a video of Dane Alderson playing with Troy Roberts’ Nu-Jive, and it led me to check out more of the saxophonists videos. Mr. Roberts obviously has a knack for picking great bassists, because I was blown away by Eric England in this video for the song “Stoner.” The bassist floats a nice big...
Robert Glasper Experiment: NPR Tiny Desk Concert
The NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert series always seems to draw something special out of artists. The setting forces musicians to make a statement with a reduced set and limited instrumentation. Essentially, it shows viewers what a group is really made of, and the Robert Glasper Experiment used to the opportunity to prove they’re the real thing. The core of...
Hadrien Feraud and Federico Malaman: Cherokee Jam at NAMM 2014
I’m still in recovery mode from NAMM this year, but I’ve been checking out all the great videos pouring in from the show. Here’s a crazy fast version of “Cherokee” by Hadrien Feraud and Federico Malaman at the Ken Smith booth. The duo trade solos at break-neck speeds, each more intense than the last. Hold on tight.
Omer Cordell: Jennie
Omer Cordell sent us this video of a tune he calls “Jennie”. Omer composed and performs this bass-focused tune with multiple bass tracks, harmonics and a nice vibe throughout.
Sebastian Sanhueza: 50 Bass Intros
Everybody loves a good bass intro, especially bass players. Sebastian Sanhueza pays homage to the bass intro in this video he made in which he plays fifty bass intros in a single take. For anyone looking to play along, Sanhueza compiled tabs for each of them (grab them here). What’s your favorite bass intro? Tell us in the comments.
Now Vs Now: Big Pump (Live)
I hung out with Evan Marien for a while during the NAMM Show, and he told me I must check out bassist Panagiotis Andreou. I later got the chance to meet Panagiotis and asked him to send me some videos. It was nearly impossible to pick one, but in the end, I decided on this one by Now Vs Now....
Victor Wooten and Steve Bailey: NAMM Jam 2014
It wouldn’t be NAMM without a performance by this epic duo. This year, Victor Wooten and Steve Bailey took the stage and did their take on George Gershwin’s “Summertime.”
BFI, featuring Miles Mosley: The Mighty HRP
Miles Mosley is the epitome of cool. Add drummer Tony Austin and it’s an unstoppable duo. Here’s a video of the master musicians doing their thing on the song “The Mighty HRP.”
Yuval Raz: All Bass Arrangement of Opeth’s “To bid you farewell”
I love Opeth, so when our friend Yuval Raz sent in this video of his bass cover of “To Bid You Farewell,” I knew it was going to be good. Raz covers the whole tune, which appeared on 1996’s Morningrise, including the bass line, melody, and harmony. Overall, the version has four channels of bass recorded on the bassist’s Ken...
Chuks Okpu: Chuk for Chick
There are plenty of musicians who call themselves multi-instrumentalists, but Chuks Okpu is the real deal. Steve Bailey, who has been working with Okpu at Berklee, sent us this video for the song “Chuk for Chick,” which is inspired by Chick Corea. Okpu lays down the drums, keys, double bass, and electric bass with an incredible groove and level of...
