Nathan Navarro: One Handed Bass Solo

Nathan Navarro: One Handed Bass Solo

Nathan Navarro had a dream that he lost one of his arms, which inspired him to write this solo bass piece. The ethereal piece is a little dream-like itself and features some real right hand dexterity to execute the complicated tapping. For more on Nathan, check out his New School interview.

Nothing but Bass: Metallica’s “Master of Puppets” All Bass Arrangement

Hold onto your hats. Bruno Masquio took Metallica’s “Master of Puppets” and arranged it for nothing but bass. Pretty sweet bass too.

Charnett Moffett: Star Spangled Banner

Bassist Charnett Moffett takes his upright bass and channels some Hendrix in this all-bass rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner”. Happy fourth!

Huw Foster: Solo Bass Cover of Stevie Wonder’s “As”

Huw Foster: Solo Bass Cover of Stevie Wonder’s “As”

Until today, I’ve never seen a video by bassist Huw Foster. Now I’ve seen a ton. I enjoyed them all, but this one stood out. Huw plays an improvised intro and outro, with the tune starting around the 0:38 mark. He’s even incorporated a riff from the Live at Last version.

Trio Bravo with MarloweDK: History Confusion

Trio Bravo with MarloweDK: History Confusion

Thomas Risell, perhaps better known as MarloweDK around these parts is part of the jazz/rock trio Trio Bravo, along with guitarist Per Gade and drummer Thomas Duus. Here they are rehearsing Gade’s tune, “History Confusion”. These guys know how to get down! Good stuff from MarloweDK, as always.

JoStLe Live: Lee Sklar, Steve Bailey and Jonas Hellborg

During the 2012 Musikmesse show, bassists Lee Sklar, Steve Bailey and Jonas Hellborg took the stage, along with drummer Chester Thompson. Bass awesomeness ensued. The song was written by Sklar and Bailey, who hadn’t named it yet (maybe you can suggest a name in the comments for them).

Steps Ahead with Richard Bona & Mike Stern: Jazz Vitoria Live (2005)

Steps Ahead took the stage at the 2005 Jazz Vitoria with Richard Bona and Mike Stern, and performed some amazing music, like this. The band also features Bill Evans on sax, Mike Mainieri on vibraphone and Steve Smith on drums. Enjoy.

Geddy Lee Interview: Clockwork Angels, Writing, Touring and Breaking Through

Rush’s new label, Road Runner Records, recently interviewed bassist Geddy Lee to coincide with the trio’s latest album, Clockwork Angels. Geddy shares the story behind the album, his thoughts on the band’s Time Machine tour, writing music and breaking through as a musician. I was surprised to hear Geddy share that he had some real breakthroughs as a musician on...

John Scofield with Gary Grainger and Dennis Chambers: “Pick Hits”, Live

John Scofield with Gary Grainger and Dennis Chambers: “Pick Hits”, Live

Here’s a winning formula for you: let bassist Gary Grainger and drummer Dennis Chambers back you up. That’s exactly what John Scofield did for this live performance. Holy smokes.

Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay: Bass & Vocal Arrangement

Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay: Bass & Vocal Arrangement

There’s tap, there’s solo bass arrangements, and then there’s this. Bassist Wes Sperry arranged Otis Redding’s classic “Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay” for bass and vocals fitting to the original. He even has the whistling part in there! It isn’t how many notes you can play. It is just finding the right ones.

Evan Marien and Dana Hawkins: “Hiii”, Live

Evan Marien and Dana Hawkins: “Hiii”, Live

I’ve always enjoyed Evan Marien’s “Hiii”, a track from his Here We Are EP, though I wondered how it could be pulled off live. I can now cross that off the list. Here’s Evan with drummer Dana Hawkins (who is awesome, btw), performing the tune live at Matt Garrison’s Shapeshifter Lab in New York.

Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes: Isolated Bass & Vocals

Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes: Isolated Bass & Vocals

Our Facebook friend Leon Wilson shared this alternate track with us, featuring the isolated bass work of Bakithi Kumalo on Paul Simon’s hit, “Diamonds on the Soles of her Shoes”. Yep, this is all that’s needed. Bakithi holds down so much at once, yet without sounding like he’s doing too much. Genius at work.
