Ran Kaufman: Solo Bass, Funky BaBa
Bassist Ran Kaufman sent us some of his videos, and we were immediately impressed. Ran employs loops in his work, and does so in a way that lays down a nice groove to let him showcase his soloing abilities. Here’s Ran performing his tune “Funky BaBa”. Funky indeed.
Return to Forever 2008: The Sorceress (Live)
Oh man. This is some great music, and some sweet grooves. The reunited Return to Forever, with Stanley Clarke, Lenny White, Chick Corea and Al Di Meola, performed at Montreux in July 2008. The concert was released a year later on the DVD. This performance of “The Sorceress” from that show has it all, including a great bass face by...
Amy LaVere: Take ’Em Or Leave ’Em
I hope you’re enjoying your Sunday. Here’s something from bassist/vocalist Amy LaVere and her trio to make it even better.
Simon Fitzpatrick: Solo Bass Cover of “Stairway to Heaven”
Bass whiz Simon Fitzpatrick has done it again with a jaw-dropping version of Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven”. This clip comes from a May 22nd performance with the Carl Palmer Band at Stag Theatre in Sevenoaks, Kent. The bassist even covers the guitar solo with one handed tapping while keeping the bass line going, eventually wrapping up the big jam...
Schizophrenic: Oz Noy, Will Lee, Keith Carlock (Live)
Ohhhhh yeah. Here’s guitarist Oz Noy’s band, with the awesome pairing of bassist Will Lee and drummer Keith Carlock performing the tune “Schizophrenic” live in Tokyo. The well-named tune switches from funky to rocking and back. Will is definitely laying it down and having fun on this one.
Tedeschi Trucks Band: “Come See About Me” (Live)
On the heels of the release of Everybody’s Talkin’ this week, here’s the Tedeschi Trucks Band performing the “Come See About Me”. Once again, Oteil Burbridge lays down just the right bass line. Check out around the 1-minute mark when he gets the attention of Derek and Susan. Awesome.
Avishai Cohen Trio: Avraham Avinu (Live)
In our 2009 interview with Stanley Clarke, he told us he enjoyed the music of Avishai Cohen. The drummer is pretty killer too. See if you agree:
Andres Rotmistrovsky and Marcelo Woloski: Blackbird (Bass and Percussion Duo)
We’ve heard a lot of versions of The Beatles’s “Blackbird,” but this one sticks out. Bassist Andres Rotmistrovsky teamed up with percussionist Marcelo Woloski to do an African/Middle Eastern influenced take on the tune. Rotmistrovsky, who is admittedly a huge fan of the Fab Four, plays on a Hofner Violin Bass while Woloski plays the Calabash to create a unique...
Jaco Pastorius Big Band: Invitation Live Featuring Damian Erskine and Peter Erskine
How cool is this? Bassist (and No Treble columnist) Damian Erskine joins his uncle, drummer Peter Erskine, in a live performance with the Jaco Pastorius Big Band. This performance was part of Jaco’s 60th birthday celebration and took place last November in Kawasaki, Japan. Damian kills it!
The Real History of Rush
The guys from Rush are so cool. In addition to their amazing musicianship, they’re really funny. And pretty good actors. This of course comes from the band’s Time Machine 2011 – Live in Cleveland DVD. We may be partial, but we like Geddy Lee’s character best.
Tom Pesch and his Ric: Rush “Hemispheres” Play-Along
Bassist Tom Pesch shared several videos he’s put together, playing along to Rush tunes with his basses to match. Here’s Tom playing “Hemispheres” on his Rickenbacker 4001. Well done.
Youtube’s Bass Players: A Parody of Epic Proportions
A Youtuber and bassist who goes by the name Kanal von FZroma (FZroma, for short) has put together an awesome and hilarious parody of some of the best bassists on Youtube. FZroma says we shouldn’t take this seriously. In fact, this is more of a tribute. “With this particular video I wanna show the guys who influenced me in playing...
