Rami Lakkis & Gene Lake: Insomnia

Shapeshifter Lab is a great venue in Brooklyn that hosts innovative artists to explore musical boundaries, and since it’s co-owned by Matt Garrison, you can bet that it’s very bass-friendly.

Here’s a great clip of bassist Rami Lakkis with drummer Gene Lake performing “Insomnia” at Shapeshifter last year. The song is an original composition by Lakkis that fuses electronica and live playing to create a rich sonic atmosphere.

Lakkis employs impeccable fingerpicking and note choices to create his unique voice on the bass. All bass players can all appreciate Lake’s high-energy drumming, too.

Wow! Great stuff. I need to get this. Loved it!

  2. Hahaha, yeah Matt Garrison digs this! This sounds a lot like the voicings/techniques he would use… plus he plays with Gene from time to time.

    • Brandon, you’re 100% correct! Matt Garrison is my biggest influence and Gene is one of my favourite drummers due to the fact that he and Matt gel so well together. Thanks for listening to the video ?

  3. Can I just say how often Gene is overlooked? He’s one of the most badass musicians out there.

  4. Hi Kevin, thank you so much!

  5. Rami turn your bass up a couple of notches, its nice and I like the music.

Dang, that is just impressive. Both musicians are on fire. Love Rami’s left (picking/plucking) hand technique. I totally dig!!!

Incredible tune by amazing players – behind the technique is a whole lotta heart and soul! Nice one Rami!!

  9. A lot of notes and fingers flying …Nice groove going on, here, Rami . Cheers to you and Gene.

  10. WOW… that is an awesome piece. Their styles complement each other SO well. :)

  11. Gene is explosive with his work , most excellent . I have Sony speakers and a bass woofer on my computer , I cranked it up a few notches and Rami is great on bass . Originally I bought this set of speakers for my flat screen TV, they have cheap speakers, but decided to move them to my computer to get good bass rumble. I do like the natural wood look on any bass and almost bought one but ran in to problems with the make of the particular bass I purchased .

Why is it right after you purchase a new bass two weeks later you see one you wish you would have bought, even though I’m 100% pleased with what I have.

There’s lot of Ewe’s and Ah’s seeing all these nice basses .
