Best of 2022: The Top 10 Albums
In 2022, we featured over 130 new albums featuring bassists from all over the world. At the end of each year, we tally the stats. Here are the top 10 reader-favorite albums this year.
1. Timothy B. Schmit Releases Solo Album, “Day By Day”
Timothy B. Schmit has returned with another solo album. “Day By Day” was written and recorded during breaks in the Eagles’ touring schedule with Jackson Browne, Lindsey Buckingham, John Fogerty, Jim Keltner, and others.
2. Steve Vai Recruits Philip Bynoe, Bryan Beller, and Henrik Linder for “Inviolate”
Steve Vai has released his 10th solo album, entitled “Inviolate”. The album was created with his latest instrument, The Hydra. Vai is joined by his longtime bassists Philip Bynoe and Bryan Beller as well as Dirty Loops low ender Henrik Linder.
3. Leland Sklar & The Immediate Family Release Live EP
The Immediate Family is back with another EP following last year’s self-titled full-length record. “Live From Telefunken Soundstage” was captured at the microphone company’s headquarters in Connecticut in November 2021.
4. Jeff Berlin Honors Jack Bruce on “Jack Songs”
In 2014, the world lost a musical giant with the passing of Jack Bruce. Jeff Berlin began working on a tribute album shortly after his passing, and now that album is available as “Jack Songs,” with an unreal cast of musicians.
5. Steve Lawson Pays Tribute to Rick Turner with New Album
The world lost a visionary and pioneer of the bass world when Rick Turner passed away on April 17, 2022. Steve Lawson had a special relationship with Turner, and he’s just released a tribute album, simply called “Rick”.
6. Jethro Tull Returns with “The Zealot Gene”
The mighty Jethro Tull have returned with their first studio album in nearly 20 years. The Zealot Gene has been in the works since 2017 when the band’s hiatus came to an end. It also marks David Goodier’s first studio album with the group.
7. Krist Novoselic Releases “3rd Secret” with Fellow Grunge Heroes
Krist Novoselic is completely off social media. As such, he was great a keeping his newest album and band a surprise. 3rd Secret includes Jillian Raye, Kim Thayil, Matt Cameron, Bubba Dupree, and Jennifer Johnson.
8. Cory Wong Releases “Power Station” with Sonny T. and Victor Wooten
It’s no secret that Cory Wong has been on a roll with his band, the Wongnotes, over the past couple of years. His latest album, “Power Station”, includes bassists Sonny Thompson and Victor Wooten.
9. Larry Graham, Melvin Davis, and More Featured On New Temptations Record, “60”
The Temptations are one of the greatest vocal groups of all time. After six decades in the business, they’re taking a victory lap with their newest album, aptly entitled “60”. They’ve recruited a stellar cast of bassists too.
10. David Bowie’s Shelved “Toy”, Featuring Gail Ann Dorsey, Gets Full Release
After two decades on the shelf, David Bowie’s 2001 album “Toy” has gotten an official release. Bowie’s band at the time included Mark Plati, Sterling Campbell, Earl Slick, Mike Garson, Holly Palmer, Emm Gryner, and Gail Ann Dorsey.
