Vintage Funk: Alan Gorrie and Average White Band Perform “Work To Do” Live in 1975
Here’s a gem that just hit YouTube. This newly released clip from The Midnight Special features Average White Band performing “Work To Do” back in 1975, and it’s all about the groove.
Alan Gorrie is holding it down on his Fender Precision Bass, running through what looks to be an Acoustic 370 and 301 rig. The result is that unmistakable punch, tight and round, sitting perfectly in the pocket. His tone is big without getting boomy, and it drives the whole band forward.
The performance is tight from top to bottom, but Gorrie’s bass work is what makes it feel so good. If you’re into vintage funk and classic tone, this one is worth your time.

This was awesome! I am 69 and remember this song well. The bass tone is fabulous and absolutely drives this song from start to finish.
Forgot this time! Bass is definitely kickin’. Love it.
