Jeremy Woolhouse and Shannon Birchall: Optimist’s Folly
The Bradetich Foundation shared this video of bassist Shannon Birchall performing a beautiful duet with pianist Jeremy Woolhouse, which was recorded last year at Baker Street Studios in Melbourne, Australia. Birchall provides an introspective arco melody to set the tone of the song before the duo share a flowing improvisation over the song’s changes. Perfect for a Sunday afternoon. Or...
Weather Report: “Where The Moon Goes”, Live in Tokyo 1983
Here’s a great performance of what turned out to be Weather Report’s last official lineup. The group is performing the tune “Where The Moon Goes”, originally recorded on the album, Procession. Victor Bailey is laying down the groove and the song features drummer Omar Hakim quite heavily (we’re okay with that.)
Kabas: Funk Jazz Groove
Maree Erkkila Palma suggested we check out some videos by Brazilian bassist Valter Kabas, and we’re glad she did. Here’s a great Funk/Jazz groove he put up that is full of tasty licks and delicious tone.
Cobham Duke Band: “Juicy” Live with Alphonso Johnson
Juan Alderete shared this on his Facebook page a while back, saying only “this leaves me speechless.” I feel about the same way. Filmed in Montreux in 1976, this clip captures the kind of energy you just don’t see in every band. Alphonso Johnson holds down the low end with tight yet lyrical playing before taking a tasty solo at...
Nothing But Bass: 90 Kontrabass Orchestra
Szoke Richard shared this video, saying “no treble at all”. Indeed. And we love it. 90 bass orchestra!
Legends, with Marcus Miller: “Put It Where You Want It” (1997)
Sweetness. Drummerworld shared this video featuring a great combo with Marcus Miller and Steve Gadd holding it down on “Put It Where You Want It” back in 1997. The group also includes Eric Clapton, Joe Sample and David Sanborn. The performance took place as part of Legends Live at Montreux, recorded in Switzerland in 1997.
Adam Ben Ezra: Solo Bass Cover of Andy McKee’s “Drifting”
I can’t remember when I first discovered Adam Ben Ezra on Youtube, just that I was completely blown away. Browsing through videos today, I decided to go back and look at Adam’s older work. Then I stumbled upon Adam’s cover of the Andy McKee tune, “Drifting”. And once again: mind blown. In addition to incredible solo bass work, there’s some...
Jaco Pastorius, Alex Acuña and Manolo Badrena: Bass & Percussion Jam
Another gem emerges with a recording of Jaco Pastorius and his early years in Weather Report. As the story goes, Alex Acuña and Manolo Badrena had just finished a killer version of “Rumba Mama” when Jaco jumped in on bass. This all took place at The Roxy in Los Angeles. There’s only one problem with this clip: it is way...
Victor Bailey, Lenny White & Larry Coryell: “Low Blow” Live (2006)
During the 2006 Jazz Triumph Festival, Victor Bailey took the stage with guitarist Larry Coryell and drummer Lenny White. The trio performed Victor’s tune “Low Blow”, from the bassist’s album of the same name. Victor not only plays some impressive bass lines, he sings along with them too. Monster!
Meshell Ndegeocello with Pino Palladino: “Home is Where the Hatred Is”
Santi Umbert sent us this clip of Meshell Ndegeocello teaming up with bassist Pino Palladino for a cover of Gil Scott-Heron’s “Home Is Where The Hatred Is.” Palladino lays down a seriously funky groove throughout the entire song while the band kicks it out. The songs then evolves into a bass jam around the four minute mark as Ndegeocello picks...
Red Hot Chili Peppers: Abbey Road Studios
Here’s a fun Red Hot Chili Peppers. video shot back in 2006 at Abbey Road Studios. Flea and the guys kick things off with a discussion about the roots for the tune “Dani California”, some math history and more. Oh, plus some cool performances, of course.
Rich Brown: Nguyên
Rich Brown is such a monster bass player. Watch this performance, taken from Rich’s solo bass concert in Toronto about two weeks ago, and you’ll see what I’m talking about. The tune, “Nguyên”, is dedicated to the French/Vietnamese guitarist Nguyên Lê. Rich’s stellar musicianship and technique comes through loud and clear. No flash, just great music.
