NT10: Top 10 Basses of the Week

In celebration of our 10 year anniversary this month, we’re taking a look back at some of the most popular features in our history.

On August 25, 2011, Kevin kicked off the always popular Bass of the Week series with the goal of “featuring low-end instruments ranging from beautiful to bizarre.”

In the years since we’ve featured over 400 basses in this weekly spotlight. Here are the top 10 reader favorites.

Bass of the Week: Rickenbacker Limited Edition Lemmy Kilmister Signature 4004LK

1. Bass of the Week: Rickenbacker Limited Edition Lemmy Kilmister Signature 4004LK

Rickenbacker paid tribute to metal icon and Motorhead frontman Lemmy Kilmister with the introduction of the 4004LK, a signature bass limited to 60 pieces that was first spotted in 1995, though production started around 2000. The bass is half instrument, half art, as each piece’s walnut body features a hand-carved relief of oak leaves and white checked binding. Since they...
Bass of the Week: Fender Aerodyne Jazz Bass

2. Bass of the Week: Fender Aerodyne Jazz Bass

Fender set the standard with the Precision Bass in 1951, following it up the Jazz Bass in 1960. This week we’re taking a look at a bass that sleekly blends the two icons: the Fender Aerodyne Jazz Bass. The blacked out bass features a slender basswood body fitted with a P/J pickup configuration. Contoured for comfort, the Aerodyne’s top has...
Bass of the Week: Jon Willis’ Billy Sheehan “Wife” Bass Replica

3. Bass of the Week: Jon Willis’ Billy Sheehan “Wife” Bass Replica

Jon Willis shared a photo of his pride and joy on our Facebook page, and needless to say I was floored by the instrument. But the story behind it is even better. The bass is a near perfect replica of Billy Sheehan’s famous Wife bass, which the Mr. Big bassist used from his very first gig in 1971 until the...
Bass of the Week: Stash Stainless Bass Guitar

4. Bass of the Week: Stash Stainless Bass Guitar

While perusing Facebook, I stumbled upon this uber-sleek, uber-unique instrument: The Stash Stainless Bass Guitar. Designed and built by Stanislaw Potyrala in Mississauga, Ontario, the bass is made entirely of stainless steel, which the company says improves stiffness, mechanical and environmental stability, sound quality and tunability. “The only disadvantage is that rock stars will not be able to destroy this...
Bass of the Week: Keybass 3.0

5. Bass of the Week: Keybass 3.0

We love innovative basses, so when Jonathan Dauphinais announced the Keybass 3.0, we were pumped. The instrument is a bass guitar with a keyboard synthesizer mounted to its lower half so that each can be played simultaneously. Dauphinais first started experimenting in 2007. This is the third model of his concept, which was completely custom made. “I did major modifications...
Bass of the Week: MonoNeon’s Microtonal Bass

6. Bass of the Week: MonoNeon’s Microtonal Bass

Most No Treble readers will recognize MonoNeon as a forward thinking bassist with a unique style that blends R&B with modern experimental music. He often plays with microtonality, meaning he uses quarter tones in addition to semi-tones that are created on fretted instruments. “My fascination with microtonality is ‘casual’, similar to my fascination with Dadaism, Color Field, and other visual...
Bass of the Week: Esperanza Spalding’s South Paw Fretless 5-String

7. Bass of the Week: Esperanza Spalding’s South Paw Fretless 5-String

If you happen to follow Esperanza Spalding’s Facebook page, you might have seen from photos of her Radio Music Society summer tours that she’s wielding a slick new 5-string fretless. The bass is a South Paw, created by NYC luthier Simon Propert, and it’s one of a kind. “Each bass is custom and a little different, so there is no...
Bass of the Week: o3 Guitars Rhodium Purplehaze

8. Bass of the Week: o3 Guitars Rhodium Purplehaze

This week we take a look at another eye-catching bass from o3 Custom Guitars called the Rhodium. The Spanish-made bass is also called the Purplehaze due to its gorgeous purple satin finish over its ash body. Its neck is a five-piece laminate comprised of flamed maple and wenge with a pau ferro toneblock. The bass is fitted with a pair...
Bass of the Week: Padalka Guitars Ennea Hotchkiss 3-String Bass

9. Bass of the Week: Padalka Guitars Ennea Hotchkiss 3-String Bass

Extended-range basses have become a huge trend in the last few years with instruments having anywhere from five to twenty-four strings. While Russian custom shop Padalka Guitars has built several seven and nine-string basses, they decided to take a more minimalist approach with the Ennea Hotchkiss, a three-string bass with bold contours. A riff on their flagship Ennea model, the...
Bass of the Week: Toby Chennell Arco Acoustic Bass Guitar

10. Bass of the Week: Toby Chennell Arco Acoustic Bass Guitar

In July, we posted a cool video of Bart Soeters displaying a wide variety of basses, and one of his instruments really stood out to me: the Toby Chennell Arco Acoustic Bass Guitar. The electric bass and upright bass share several qualities, but overall they’re really different instruments. UK-based luthier Toby Chennell set out to bring more of their elements...
